Hour of Code

The class has successfully completed the Hour of Code along with 60+ million students worldwide. Every student had the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem solving skills, logic and creativity. Each student has been awarded this certificate for spending one hour learning about computer science and coding.  If your child would like to continue to do some coding, here is the Shaker Lane Computer Lab website.

Math ~ Nonstandard Measuring

We learned about nonstandard measuring in math.  We used pennies, cubes and paperclips to measure different things.  We learned the measuring tools need to be touching, no spaces, straight and start at the beginning.

snow

The Snow Is Here!!

Please remember to send your child with a coat, hat, and mittens everyday,
as all children will be going out for recess. Children may play in the snow
at lunch recess only. If your child plans on playing in the snow they must
have snow pants, boots, hat, and mittens (all in a sturdy bag).  If your
child wears boots to school, please pack another pair of shoes in their
backpack or a sturdy, labeled bag. It is also recommended that you put an
extra pair of socks in your child’s backpack.  :)

First Grade snow days will be on Wednesday & Friday.

Your child only needs to bring snow pants on the above days, if they wish.
They may also keep an extra pair of snow pants at school as long as they
are in a sturdy bag. In order to play in the snow there needs to be at least
a few inches (3 or more) of snow.  Decisions are made on a daily basis,
weather permitting.

                                 Thank you,

Halloween

gluten-free-pumpkin.png  Halloween 2018  gluten-free-pumpkin.png

We are very excited to celebrate Halloween on Wednesday, October 31. We are planning many fun and exciting events for the day. Please read the following information.

Costumes

Please DO NOT send your child to school in their Halloween Costume. Send the costume in a brown paper bag labeled with their NAME. This is very important to ensure that all pieces of the costumes return home after the school activities.

Do not send in any toy weapons that may accompany your child’s costume. This is a Shaker Lane policy.

There will be parent volunteers in the classroom to help your children change into their costume.

Parade

The Shaker Lane Halloween Parade will take place at 2:00. The children will parade around the outside of the building. All are welcome at the parade. You may want to arrive a few minutes early as parking can be tight.  We hope to see you there!

Party

Our party will take place after the parade and community meeting! (Unfortunately, the community meeting & party are for students & room parents only, due to space limitations).

Thank you so much for all of your help to make our Halloween activities run smoothly.
Hope to see you at the parade!!

First Day of School!!!

WOW!!!  What a great day :)   Our first day was a fun filled day learning about 1st grade.  We read a story about Pete the Cat Rocking My School Shoes!  We went on a tour looking for Pete while getting to know where places are.  We also got to water color Pete!!!  The kids had a fantastic time doing this!

We played some name games and get to know you games.  We talked about our emotions on the first day of school.  We even got to graph how we were feeling!
